Big Gulp enthusiasts everywhere rejoiced on Thursday morning when Starbucks officially announced the introduction of the 31oz “Trenta” size in test markets in Arizona and Florida. Reps insist the size will only be used for low-calorie iced coffee and iced tea – but when I order my Trenta Breve Raspberry White Chocolate Mocha (no whip unless it’s Friday) they better Just Say Yes.

And yet I remember like it was yesterday reassuring the appalled creator of the La Marzocco espresso machine. Sr. Pierro Bambi, that yes we at Starbucks would put at least two shots of espresso in the gigantic double-sized (12 fl. oz!) take-out cups we were offering (this back in 1998 when the default size was the (now no longer even offered!) regular 8 oz. drink.

From “poco ma buono” to “supersize me” in a mere decade. What a scourge.

The righteous indignation on this topic (not just here) is rich. Can we be honest with ourselves and admit that 0.0001% of the shops in this country brew iced tea and iced coffee freshly on-demand? If we admit that, then suddenly we realize the functional difference on the 30oz issue between every coffee operation and starbucks (other than WHAT you pour) is how many seconds your barista is pouring into a 24oz cup vs. how many seconds a sbux partner is pouring into a 30oz cup.

AND it’s just a test. Customers will vote with their wallets. The system is not set up to register high-brow-eye-rolls.

I’m sad to see parts of the coffee community take the bait on this one. I’m heartened there’s no thread on coffeed about it.

ITs a shame that people seem to actually WANT this big of a drink. Seriously, they invented a ventie because fat assed north americans wanted more fat assedness. It makes me happy to see people with the short or tall cups because you really dont need that many calories!

If it were just straight coffee then I’d probably enjoy it, but all the sugar and other crap in it would be kind of ridiculous. I kinda hope this test bombs.
